Viola Aotearoa: The Next Generation

Beginning in 2016, Alexa began to take an active role in the promotion and performance of New Zealand music featuring the viola. This project has so far included the world premiere of Olga Parshotam’s Sonata for viola and piano, studio recordings of works by Jack Body, Martin Lodge, and Anthony Watson (recordings funded by the Judith Clark Memorial Fellowship), and a performance of the complete Anthony Watson solo sonata at the 44th International Viola Congress in Wellington, New Zealand in September of 2017.

“Viola Aotearoa: The Next Generation” takes its name from Dr. Timothy Deighton’s recording, “Viola Aotearoa”, released on the Atoll label in 2000. Dr. Deighton is one of New Zealand’s leading violists, and as one of his former students Alexa has found herself inspired to continue in his legacy of promoting the music of New Zealand internationally.

In the Spring of 2017 Alexa performed selections of these works (alongside a presentation on New Zealand and its music and culture) in Houston’s community venues, supported by Rice University’s Sviatoslav Richter Grant for musical outreach, and continued this project in several community venues in Wellington and Christchurch.
